DOUBLE TASTING: Elena Walch - Shaking Things up in Alto Adige AND Portuguese Powerhouses

October 14, 2017, 11:00 AM - 4:00 PM

Elena Walch - Shaking Things up in Alto Adige

Over the last 26 years, Elena Walch hasn’t only set the bar for quality wine in Alto Adige, she’s singlehandedly changed the winemaking landscape of the region by implementing farming techniques and winemaking philosophies other winemakers in the area now follow.

And according to her track record, the Elena Walch way is the right way. Her wines consistently earn high 90s ratings by James Suckling, Wine Enthusiast and Wine Spectator, and have won numerous Tre Bicchieri (“three glasses”) awards, the top ranking given by Gambero Rosso, one of the most respected food, wine, cooking and publishing conglomerates in Italy that is now considered the authoritative guide to Italian wines.

Portuguese Powerhouses
Portugal has famously been known for centuries for just one wine: Port. The Douro zone is changing and one fact tells all: over the past 15 years or so, about half of the wine production from the larger Douro zone is now dry, table wine. These emerging Duoro table wines can be thrilling and many offer some of the most dazzling wine values on the market today.

“Portugal is arguably the most exciting wine place on the planet today.” Matt Kramer, Wine Spectator.

Portuguese Powerhouses

2015 Portal da Calçada Vinho Verde
Vinho Verde, Portugal
This wine was produced from selected grape varieties, presenting a fruited aroma and a fresh and persistent flavor that express the unique character of the Vinho Verde DOC region. Opens with a very inviting nose of green apple, honeysuckle, lemon and lime and it only gets better from there. Tasting the wine reveals just a slight amount of fizz along with tons of tart apple, melon and grapefruit with a touch of honeysuckle sweetness. The wine is vibrant and rich on the palate with great acidity and some pleasant salty minerality that leads into the long finish filled with rich, tangy fruit.

2016 Portal da Calçada Rosé
Vinho Verde, Portugal
Pale salmon in color and very elegant in the mid-palate, this dry rosé has a certain delicacy in terms of weight, but it has plenty of pop and power on the finish. Bursting with young fruit flavor, it lingers nicely and tastes great, but the acidity is what makes this wine intriguing and a cut above. This is well done and a fine bargain.
Regular Price $15.99 per bottle, $191.88 per case
Sale Price $13.99 per bottle, $167.88 per case

 2014 LAGO Cerqueira Red

Amazing bottle and value - a definite must try. Dark ruby color, aromas of ripe red fruits with well integrated wood notes and hints of spice. 2013 Dona Maria Julio Bastos Red
Alentejano, Portugal
“Fermented in open stone lagares, this wine has a typical rounded, generous character, with rich dark fruit and tight acidity. Although smooth from wood aging, it has a taut edge, ultimately feeling ripe and full in the mouth.” 90 Points, Wine Enthusiast.

2011 Dona Maria Amantis Reserva
Alentejano, Portugal
“The 2011 Reserva Amantis is an equal blend of Syrah, Petit Verdot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Touriga Nacional, aged for one year in a mixture of French (70%) and American (30%) oak--30% new and 70% used. It comes in at 14.5% alcohol. Graceful, yet bursting with flavor, this is a lovely Reserva that maintains its concentration and elegance at the same time. There is a bit of cream on the texture from the oak, but that is already being nicely pulled in, thanks to the late release here. There is also a bit of a backbone, even though this is fully approachable. This may be my favorite Amantis Reserva from Dona Maria yet, a bit of an overachiever that does everything well.” 90 Points, The Wine Advocate.
Regular Price $29.99 per bottle, $359.88 per case
Sale Price $24.99 per bottle, $299.88 per case

2010 Dona Maria Grande Reserva Red
Alentejano, Portugal
“The 2010 Grande Reserva is a blend of 50% Alicante Bouschet (from 60-year-old Estremoz vines), 25% Syrah and 25% Petit Verdot, aged for one year in new French oak. If you wonder what you get for stepping up from the Amantis Reserva reviewed this issue, that's easy: far more concentration, better structure and far more complexity. This is a gorgeously focused Tinto that has impeccable balance. The controlled but quite noticeable tannins match the fruit perfectly. It finishes with grip and intensity of flavor, seeming graceful and carefully crafted all the while. This is a gorgeous Grande Reserva that is truly exceptional.” 94 Points, The Wine Advocate.
