The Best Portugal Has To Offer!

February 16, 2019, 11:00 AM - 4:00 PM

Portugal has famously been known for centuries for just one wine: Port. The Douro zone is changing and one fact tells all: over the past 15 years or so, about half of the wine production from the larger Douro zone is now dry, table wine. These emerging Duoro table wines can be thrilling and many offer some of the most dazzling wine values on the market today.
“Portugal is arguably the most exciting wine place on the planet today.” Matt Kramer, Wine Spectator

2017 Portal da Calçada Vinho Verde
Vinho Verde, Portugal

This Vinho Verde, from the higher & slightly warmer sub-region of Amarante, is crisp and clean. Floral aromas are nicely filled out with honeysuckle & green apple along with expected lemon/lime notes. Nicely balanced palate with great acidity & salinity. Tastes of fresh citrus, Granny Smith apples beautifully blend with honeydew melon and hints of passion fruit with just a note of sweetness. Dry with light body, lively acidity and a lingering finish. A cracking Portuguese Vinho Verde! Bravo!

2017 Beyra Bianco
Beiras, Portugal

"The vineyards of winemaker Rui Roberedo Madeira are located at over 700 meters altitude. Optimal conditions for a slow ripening process of the grapes, which brings the complex flavors to full development and ensures a crisp freshness. The slate and quartz-rich soils provide mineral notes. Fruity and fresh, with aromas of pears and white flowers, perfect as an aperitif or accompaniment to light fish dishes." 96 Points, Decanter

2016 Herdade do Rocim Touriga Nacional
Alentejo, Portugal

Aromas of plum, violet, blackberry, cinnamon and blueberry lead into intensely bold fruit flavors with grippy tannins. Alentejo hot summers make ripening easy, and sweet grapes mean rich fruit and lots of body. Alentejo reds may be inexpensive, rich, round and full, but still with a certain opulence and easy-drinking charm that rival big Cali Cabs!

2014 Herdade do Rocim Alentejano Alicante Bouschet Tinto

2013 Dona Maria Grand Reserva Red
Alentejo, Portugal

The Dona Maria (Júlio Bastos) Grande Reserva 2013 is a blend of Alicante Bouchet, Petit Verdot, Touriga Nacional, and Syrah. It’s foot trodden in marble “lagares” (like vintage Port) to start fermentation and then aged one year in French oak. This is a serious red that punches above its price point. A terrific red Portuguese wine that is big, smooth, and complex all at once. There are notes of black fruit, cocoa nibs, violets, stems, and mahogany. It’s full-bodied and fruity without being over the top. A slightly longer finish would push this to epic levels. That being said, it’s a beautiful wine and something to bring to your friends who insist they only drink Cabernet.
