The 96 point 2013 Tasca d'Almerita "Rosso del Conte" is one of Italy's great reds. The first single-vineyard wine ever produced in Sicily. Rosso del Conte proved that Italy's south could also produce world class, age-worthy reds of superlative quality.
In the late 1960's, founder Count Giuseppe Tasca wanted to make a truly Sicilian wine that could age like the great international red blends such as Bordeaux and Chateanuneuf-du-Pape. After selecting the fruit from the best parcels and experimenting with careful oak treatment (something unheard of in Sicily at that time), Rosso del Conte was born. Today, Rosso del Conte still stands as a revered icon amoung Sicilian reds and continues to be make from the very best selections of the old-vine estate vineyards.
2013 Tasca d'Almerita "Rosso del Conte"
Sicily, Italy, Contea di Sclafani DOC
"So much treacle tart to this red but then tons of florals such as jasmine, violets and then mulberries and hints of vanilla. Full body and a remarkably juicy and tangy center palate of forest fruits, which are ripe but run clean thanks to no shortage of refreshing acidity. Long and fruit-forward yet somehow minerally on the finish. A triumph! Perhaps the best Nero d'Avola blend ever made." 96 Points, James Suckling
"54% Nero d'Avola and 26% Perricone blended with other red varieties from the estate. The nose is sumptuous, with ripe, oaky, cherry and blueberry aromas. The attack is sleek and very concentrated with a character that's so ripe it's almost sweet. But that sucrosity is balanced by quite high acidity that lifts the palate - minty, elegant, spicy and long." Decanter
