January Wines Of The Month - Martin Ray Winery

Wednesday, January 1

The name Martin Ray resonates deeply in the history of California Winemaking. Martin Ray was a pioneer, dedicated to crafting single varietal, region specific wine from 1943 through 1972 in Saratoga. Mentored by Paul Masson, he took a burgundian approach to winemaking. Nearly twenty years later, Courtney Benham stumbled upon 1500 cases of Martin Ray wine in a San Jose warehouse.  Recognizing his good fortune, and his intent and drive to produce terroir driven wines, Ray’s historical significance and philosophy resonated with him. Courtney purchased the brand, and has been committed to the production of artisanal wines worthy of the Martin Ray name. Martin Ray joined the Sonoma County Sustainability program and is currently working toward 100% sustainability. We look forward to sharing these impressive wines with you!

Rich in History, Organically Grown, the Authentic Antonelli San Marco Wines

Saturday, January 18, 11:00 AM - 4:00 PM

Antonelli San Marco extends over an entire 170 hectares located centrally within Montefalco's DOCG winemaking area. The estate is mentioned in several medieval documents, in which San Marco de Corticellis is described as a Longobard cohort and one of the territories most suited for the cultivation of vines and olives. From the 13th to the 19th century the property belonged to the bishop of Spoleto. In fact the current boundaries are practically the same as those described in a 13th century document currently preserved in the Bishop's Archive. With a background rich in history, the Antonelli family is passionately committed to caring for their territory and attentive to the quality of their products. The estate style is geared towards authenticity and harmony, drinkability and elegance rather than blunt power. It leans towards gentle extraction and moderate use of wood ageing. The wines are made exclusively from the estate's organically grown grapes in order to offer a product whose potential, characteristics and quality can be controlled and evaluated at every phase of production. Intriguing wines that are sure to please...join us!

Gravity-Flow Russian River Pinot, the Incomparable Moshin Wines

Friday, January 24, 4:00 PM - 6:30 PM

In the late 1970s, while teaching math at San Jose State University and working a side hustle at a home-brewing supply store, Rick was encouraged to try his hand at winemaking—and fell deeply, madly in love. His hunger for grapes soon inspired him to become a grape broker, earning access to extra fruit while forging relationships with vineyard owners throughout Northern California. This gig allowed him to be in the right place when a certain Pinot Noir vineyard went up for sale in 1989. The rest is delicious history as Winemaker Rick Moshin has been producing natural, terroir-driven, and delicious wines in the Russian River Valley ever since . He sustainably farms his own prized Goldridge-soil Pinot Noir vineyards, and using the natural yeasts of his grapes — plus the help of a dedicated winemaking team — he gently makes small-lot, premium wines in a gravity-flow winery on Sonoma County’s famed Westside Road.A self-taught farmer, Rick designed and built one of California’s first gravity-flow wine cellars. Delicate, thin-skinned Pinot Noir grapes are sensitive to being overworked, so Moshin Vineyards’ four-level cellar uses the momentum of gravity—rather than the more aggressive power of pumps and conveyors—to gently move them between each stage of wine production. The critics are raving about these spectacular wines and we couldn't agree more...come enjoy the fruits of Moshin Vineyards!

Diverse & Downright Delicious, Susana Balbo Wines!

Saturday, January 25, 11:00 AM - 4:00 PM

In a country dominated by male winemakers, Susana Balbo stands out for her incredible skill and experience. She has been making wine since she earned her enology degree in 1981 and has produced a wider variety of wines than most other winemakers in Argentina. Susana was the first Argentine winemaker to be hired as a consultant to make wine outside of Argentina. She has made wine in Australia, California, Chile, France, Italy, South Africa and Spain, and spends a month each year in a different wine region of the world studying with local winemakers and growers. After 25+ years of winemaking, Susana Balbo has a strong sense of what she wants from her wines. From every harvest, she creates the grandest possible wines under her Susana Balbo label. To achieve this, she makes a rigorous selection of the finest barrels prior to making her final blends, dividing them into the parents (reserve level wines) and offspring or "crios". Wines under her Crios label display ripe fruit flavors, excellent balance and concentration, and are meant to be enjoyed in their vibrant youth. They are also an incredibly good value. The label features a series of three connected and overlapping hands, an image that represents Susana and her children, José and Ana. In 2011, Susana passed the winemaking reins for Crios to her own son, José Lovaglio, a graduate of UC Davis. José continues to translate his mother’s vision while bringing his own unique, modern style to the wines. We are excited to bring these diverse wines to you and invite you to join us!
