Fattoria Bernardini Extra Virgin Olive Oil
Situated in the north of Lucca on a prestigious hill ideal for its geography position, Fattoria Mansi Bernardini extends its estate for about 100 hectares of olive groves and vineyards. Lucca’s olive, thanks to its unquestionably uncommon properties, is now recognized as the best in the region, and is well known all over the world.
“Lucca’s grand and historic villas are famous. Many make fine olive oil, as the hills are well suited for it, positioned between the sea and the mountains. The Mansi Bernardini estate is no exception. Its olive groves are among the best tended I have seen, with rows of healthy young plants growing out of a perfect green lawn. The estate has modernized its olive-picking techniques. High handheld “combs” driven by compressed air coax the olives from the trees, dropping them into nets stretched below. Very few trees are worked at a time, so the olives are milled as quickly as possible at the nearby frantoio. Lucca’s oil is considered among Tuscany’s best. Its sweetness places it between the lighter Ligurian oils and the more intense, fiery oils from farther south. A bright yellow-green (oils lose some of this vividness after a few months), it has a clear, fresh perfume of freshly cut grass, a sweet fruity taste, and only a light pepperiness in the finish.” From the Food and Wine Lover’s Companion to Tuscany by Carla Capalbo, Chronicle Books, San Francisco.
