> Bordeaux 2003 Tasting, Part II - Medoc
Thanks to its location, between the deep waters of the Gironde river on the east side and the fresh air and winds from the Atlantic ocean on the west side, Medoc received cooler nights and winds during this exceptionally hot 2003 summer(the hottest one in the past 100 years).

My day began at Chateau BRANAIRE DUCRU (St.Julien) with all the Saint-Julien, Saint-Estephe and Pauillac Classified Growths and Cru Bourgeois. Most of the wines were tasting well and I was particularly lured by the Saint-Estephe appellation which on this day, was the best showing of the Medoc. As for Saint-Julien, Chateau LAGRANGE was very seducing: a rich, very elegant and long finishing wine.

Next was the tasting at Chateau GISCOURS for the Margaux. The wines were brilliant, very concentrated and well structured. I really liked RAUZAN SEGLA as well as the host Chateau, GISCOURS.

The same afternoon, it was time for a third tasting: the Growths from the south of Medoc. In the brand new ultra modern cellar of Chateau LA LAGUNE, I came back to Margaux and finished my day by tasting all the Cru Bourgeois from the Medoc. The area that amazed me the most was the terroir of Saint-Seurin de Cadourne, next to Saint-Estephe, where Chateaux SOCIANDO-MALLET, CHARMAIL d’AURILHAC and SAINT-PAUL were head and shoulders above everyone else in this tasting. I think that these terroirs clearly have been saved by the ideally refreshing climatic conditions of the North Medoc, and will certainly offer some of the best wines and values of the vintage.

I was already impatient to taste the Graves and the Sauternes… where 2003 and its scorching weather are said to have made miracles...... to be continued.
